From January 1988 through January 1992. Ms. Dixon served as Commissioner of Public Safety for the State of Mississippi. In that position, she administered the several separate divisions of the department: Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, Bureau of Narcotics, Crime Laboratory, State Medical Examiner's Office, Law Enforcement Officers' Training Academy and Public Safety Planning with an approximate operating budget: $50 million. A gubernatorial appointment, Ms. Dixon was confirmed by the State Senate.
At the end of her term in office, the governor appointed Ms. Dixon to the Mississippi Ethics Commission which is charged with assuring that public officials are independent and impartial and that public office is not used for private gain.
Prior to serving as commissioner of Public Safety, Ms. Dixon directed the Investigative Audit Division of the State Auditor's Office where she managed a staff of auditors and investigators auditing for misappropriations and assisted with lawsuits to enforce the audits.
While living in Washington, DC, Ms. Dixon served as assistant solicitor in the Office of Special Counsel, United States Department of Energy, part of a litigation task force created to audit the major domestic oil producers' compliance with price regulations and prosecute enforcement actions. She joined the John Glenn Presidential Committee, Inc., in 1982, where she developed computer systems for campaign research and handled FEC legal compliance.
Ms. Dixon has served as the Chairman, Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Foundation, a non-profit foundation for economic redevelopment, Belhaven Improvement Association, and Jackson Friends of the Library. She is president of Greenfield Plantation, Inc., in Natchez, MS, and oversees tree farming, timber, hunting, and mineral interests for a family corporation.
Ms. Dixon is the author of two suspense novels, loosely based on her experience in state government: Next to Last Chance, (1998); and Outside Chance, (1999). She also published two children's activity books: What Did I Do Today? and What did I Do Today? for Young Writers.
